Local Attractions and history
Chestertown, established in 1706, was once an important sea port during the colonial period and is now the county seat of Kent County. Chestertown is not a town that history forgot, but rather, it is a town that history gratefully remembers. Proud of their colonial past, residents have been restoring many of the Georgian and Federal homes built during the 18th century by wealthy merchants.
Many of the beautiful old mansions are open to the public during the celebrated Candlelight Tour, as well as at other times such as the Garden Tour, and the Christmas Tour. There are also special events throughout the year such as: the Tea Party Festival, held annually to remember Chestertown's own version of the Boston Tea Party; Antique Show; and Downrigging. The Schooner Sultana is a 1768 reproduction schooner that invites students and members of the public the opportunity to sail on the Chester River and gain a greater appreciation for the history and natural environment of the Chesapeake Bay. The Prince Theatre, providing drama productions and live music entertainment, is right across the street from the White Swan. We are happy to provide guests with information on these and other events and activities.
There are many interesting things to do and see in the area, as well as unique shopping and terrific restaurants. Chestertown is also home to Washington College, the tenth oldest college in the nation. The quiet pace of the Eastern Shore makes for a wonderful retreat whether you are a sailing enthusiast, a cyclist eager to enjoy some of the best bike riding in the region, or someone who simply wants to enjoy a great book while having afternoon tea.
